Instructions for tying a Head Wrap

BACK - Women's Clothing Part II

Jackie Shaffer offered to show us how to tie a head wrap that was worn by servants and commoners. First she wove a 1/2 inch x 2 yard ribbon on an Inkel loom. Gross grain ribbon may be used instead.

Notice the pouch for the hair in the back once the wrap is finished.

A large square of linen is folded in a triangle and centered over the forehead. The ends are wound into tight tubes and crossed in the back.

Next the ribbon is centered and wrapped around the head about 1 inch from the edge of the wrap. It is then coiled around the tube on each side.

Holding the two ends with the ribbon secured cross them over the forehead.

Coil the ends around the first coil. The left side wraps over and under the right coil.

The right side wraps under and over the left coil.
