Calderon Company, which stayed in Tampa Bay area during the DeSoto expedition, grew a variety of vegetables to supplement their menu.

A spice box and salt box were as precious as gold and jewels in 16th century Europe. The Oriental spice trade is what got all this business started. A mortar and pestal was essential for grinding up peppers, cloves, cinnamon, cumin and other exotic concoctions.

The Aztec drink of the Gods, chocolate, soon became the favorite drink of Spanish ladies who cunningly added Old World sweetners, sugar or honey to the ambrosia. Above is a chocolate pot and a wooden frother called a "molinillo."
